Asbury’s at the Caverns is more than just a place to eat—it’s a nod to history. In the late 1700s, Bishop Francis Asbury, one of the first bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the U.S., passed through what is now Pendleton County. During his travels, he met a descendant of the man who rediscovered the caverns. So honored by the bishop’s visit, the landowner named one of the caves “Asbury’s Cave,” now known as The Stratosphere Cave.
Bishop Asbury’s detailed journal entries about the caves’ formations are believed to be the first written cave descriptions in West Virginia. Today, his name lives on in the hearty meals and friendly atmosphere of Asbury’s Restaurant.
